Wear Headphones or Earbuds Daily? Safeguard Your Hearing With a Few Tips!
These days, it seems like there’s music playing everywhere. There’s a mass proliferation of portable media players like iPhone and file sharing enable fans to build a massive music library so they can listen to their favorite tunes while on the move. Usually they listen with a headphone or a pair of earbuds to drown out background noises of daily life. It’s very convenient in that way so they can wear them anywhere like on the subway, metro buses, walking down a busy sidewalk, exercising, and so on. However many avid listeners don’t know that they are exposing themselves to a risk of hearing loss.
Consider that there has been a rise of patients with hearing loss problems in the last 20 years. Researchers were worried about the relationship between the hearing loss and prolonged use of portable music player. They believe that young people today will need hearing aids by the time they are in their forties if they keep up with listening to music all day everyday.
Here’s a few tips on how you can minimize the risk of hearing loss:
Keep the volume at 60% of the maximum volume level. Wear the headphone for 2 hour or less per day. Consider investing in some noise-canceling earbuds or headphone to block out outside noises so that turning up the volume won’t be necessary. Wear earplugs if you are constantly in close proximity to a source of loud noise, like a rock concert or construction site.
If you experience tinnitus after being exposed to loud noises for a sustained amount of time, it is possible you have some hearing loss, particularly with difficulty to hear high-pitch sounds. Visit your audiologist for a check up and some more detailed strategies to prevent further hearing loss.
