Surprise Children With an Out of the Ordinary Costume Birthday Party

Children love to dress up and when they get to dress up for a party it is double the fun for them. As parents we associate costumes with Halloween; however, a child thinks anytime is a good time for wearing costumes so switch up things a bit and have a birthday costume party for your toddler.

There is a wide variety of themes you can choose from, all of which are easy to pull off. With some basic costume party decorations you can create an oasis for your child’s next birthday party. The following ideas will get you started on planning a talk of the town costume party for your toddler.

Kids love color and the brighter, bolder and more of it the better they like it. So, why not give them a colorful occasion to remember by throwing a crayon color party. It is definitely full of color and sure to brighten any child’s day. The invitations could resemble a box of crayons with instructions for the children to dress as their favorite color. Including instructions on how to make a crayon costume will get the parents excited as well.

The decorations should be in bright colors and match colors of crayons, including streamers and balloons. Instead of a cake make cupcakes with icing colors for each color in a crayon box. Gift bags would include crayons and coloring books. This in an inexpensive way to have a toddler costume party for their birthday and the kids love it.

To make a crayon costume you will need two pieces of poster board, one for the body and one for the pointed part of the crayon. One piece should be smaller than the other, cutting this piece in half will usually make it just about the correct size to act as the tip. You will also need a pair of sweat pants and a shirt or tights to wear under the costume (they should be the color of the crayon your child chooses). Use a black marker and toddler safe face paint to match the color.

Color or paint the poster boards the color of choice. With a black marker, in big letters write “crayola” and in smaller letters write the color your child has chosen. Roll one piece into a tube shape, large enough for the child to have moving room, staple or tape the seam closed. Cut holes close to the top on the two sides for the arms. Form a cone shape with the other piece making sure it fits the child’s head. The costume can be put on by placing the body cone over the child and having them place their arms through the openings. Tie the hat on using a string and add finishing touches using some face paint.

Pirate themed scavenger hunts are great fun for kids of all ages. This could be for a costume birthday party or an anytime just to have fun party. Decorations could include streamers and balloons of black and gold with the cake made to look like a treasure chest. Gift bags would include gold foil wrapped coins, treasure maps and magnifying glasses.

Send out invitations that resemble treasure chests and request the guest to dress like a pirate. If it is nice outside choose a limited outdoor area to have the hunt. If it is cold outside hide trinkets around the house in different rooms. If the party is for toddlers there should be a trinket hidden for each child all in the same spot. For example, you could use gold coins or candy necklaces. If the parents are going help their child hunt, give them a simple map to follow. If it is just the children draw the map out, for example draw a bowl on the table with an arrow pointing to it. Once one child catches on they all will so it should not be difficult for small children to follow along.

Have fun and use your imagination. Kids have great imaginations, if you get stuck on an idea for a kids party, ask them what they would like to be and design their party around it.
