Suggestions For Tinnitus

12 million Americans suffer from Tinnitus in one form or the other. We all experience it at some point or the other in our lives. Tinnitus is not a disease or disorder but a symptom indicative of an underlying disorder. It may be cause of concern or it may not. The symptoms are curable and may be relived by treating the tinnitus directly or by treating the cause for the symptoms, i.e. the disorder. Tinnitus can be developed by anyone but it gets more common as we get older and encounter age related hearing loss.

The rate of tinnitus is greater among people who are exposed to loud noises for a long period of time like at the workplace. It can also be caused by an inner ear disorder. Tinnitus does not cause hearing loss, but usually accompanies hearing loss. If you are concerned a hearing test should be conducted. The effects of tinnitus can vary from a mild nuisance for some to a chronic disorder causing a loss of concentration, sleep problems and even depression in some cases.

Studies have shown that Tinnitus is more common than previously thought. A lot of people live with a mild form of tinnitus throughout their lives without any adverse affects. A study was conducted on a group of students that claimed to not have tinnitus. They were placed in a silent sound proof room and asked to record what they heard. A substantial portion of the test subjects claimed to have heard a variety of sounds ranging from whooshing to ringing and other sounds associated with tinnitus. Although associated with old age, it can occur in any age group.

Tinnitus is also caused by a buildup of excessive earwax in the eardrum. If the earwax is in contact with the eardrum you will experience tinnitus. Removal of the earwax results in stopping of the problem. It could also be caused by a foreign body other earwax touching the eardrum. In such a case when the problem does not stop with the clearing of earwax visit the doctor for an examination. There is no magic cure or pill for tinnitus that the millions suffering from Tinnitus may subscribe. Only certain types of tinnitus can be cured.

Avoiding continued exposure to loud noises is a good way to prevent Tinnitus. Exposure to loud noises even after you have it can worsen your condition. Water and the chlorine from a public swimming pool can irritate the ear, causing or intensifying tinnitus, so use earplugs when swimming. Avoid excessive intake of caffeine and take medication when you have a cold or the flu. White noise generators and noise cancelling headphones help cancel out the effects of tinnitus, but are not a cure so see a doctor as soon as possible.
